Card of the Day - Dec 30, 2011

The Sun (XIX)
The Christmas Tarot

Today's card from the Christmas Tarot is The Sun. This card shows a very enthusiastic Santa Claus looking forward to winter-activities and games. Even in his old age he climbs up the mountains and hills and is raring to go on an adventure in his sleigh. The sun is shining in the background reminding us that every day is a new day and there is a lot of time for us to do whatever we want and must not restrict ourselves. It is never too late for anything, and at this time of the year when preparing our  New Years Resolutions, we must remember that there is always time to fulfill all of them. The only tools we need are enthusiasm and an optimistic attitude which we must learn from this card.

Card of the Day - Dec 29, 2011

The Angel
The Christmas Tarot

In this deck, instead of the Devil card, there is the Angel card though Corrine says in her published deck she will also include a Devil card. So, keeping with the theme of Christmas, this is a wonderful card to come by. Angels are our guardians and they are there for us specially during this time of the year, when it is cold. There are two children in this card who would be lost if not for the Angel guiding them on their way. The Angel is beautiful with a golden star on her head and white billowing sleeves showing her purity. It seems very cold outside and the children are protected with gloves, hats, sweaters and of course the Angel. If the two children are able to avoid temptations and live a righteous life, they will always have the Angel guiding them.

Card of the Day -Dec 26, 2011

Today's Card of the Day from the Christmas Tarot is 'The Empress'. The card shows a young mother on the floor with her children enjoying their Christmas gifts. Her children are in her arm and on her knee. The Empress has made a comfortable home for her children. Even the toys she has given them hold significance. The daughter with a doll will be a nurturing and caring woman. There are alphabet blocks and books on the floor, so they will be well educated. Knowledge will be passed on from mother to daughter. The other child has a red ball, showing that she will be fit and active. This is a card of pregnancy, abundance, fertility, love and family ties.

Card of the Day - Dec 21, 2011

Strength
Christmas Tarot

Today's Card of the Day is Strength. No matter how hard it seems, you have the strength to overcome any difficulties. The Christmas spirit will make you strong from within. In the card we see the Angel of Strength. She comes bearing gifts: dolls, apples and a Christmas tree. She brings with her a fawn, a wild animal who she has tamed. She has come from heaven to bring peace on earth. She has in her arms and by her side a tree and an animal which is now a part of her journey. The strength which she brings is spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual. This card has come because you have within you a reserve of strength which you do not know about. This strength can be used to overcome your primal fears and desires.

Card of the Day - Dec 20, 2011

The Emperor
Christmas Tarot

This week I will be drawing the Card of the Day from the Christmas Tarot by Corrine Kenner. Check out her website here. Today's card is the Emperor, the archetypal father and husband. This card shows a businessman in a suit. But at the moment, he has set all his worldly issues aside and is spending time with his dear children. He is demonstrating a spinning toy and through it, he is reliving his childhood. He is able to connect with his children on their level, instead of dictating orders to his staff. Christmas is a time when even the most stubborn Scrooges can melt, so why not the busy businessman? He has bought interesting gifts for his children including a drum and a bugle. He is disciplined and firm by nature but is also generous and kind. His leadership is an inspiration for the young children.

The Bollywood Tarot (Cards 0-4)

Let me start off with the Bollywood Tarot cards. For those who missed my earlier blog on what this whole thing is about... I  am fusing my two loves : Bollywood and tarot and attempting to make a tarot deck, and looking for common archetypes between the two. I start with a description of the movie from which the card is inspired and the reason why it is chosen for the particular card.

THE FOOL
Movie: Shree 420 (1955)

The first card of the Tarot is the Fool. When I got into Tarot, the first thing that came into my mind when I saw the Fool card, was the song 'Mera joota hai japani'. It is a classic song from the movie Shree 420 by the late Raj Kapoor. The main reason why it reminded me of it, was because the movie and the song in particular were about an innocent fool's journey and the beginning of adventures. The movie shows Raj Kapoor, a simpleton who sings that his shoes are from Japan, his pants are from England, his hat is from Russia but he is an Indian at heart. Spoken just like the Fool who has travelled the world, but he knows his truth and his essence. Also, he carries with him a knapsack, which is just like the one the Fool carries in the Tarot.

THE MAGICIAN
Movie: Guzaarish (2010)

What better way to assign the Magician card than to a movie based on the life of an extraordinary magician? Guzaarish is an outstanding movie based on the true story of Ethan Masceranhes played by Hrithik Roshan, who was a magician who conjured up wonderful tricks, but because of an accident he becomes bound to the bed and the wheelchair. He wants to die, but mercy killing is illegal. The movie is about his battle towards death, or towards his ultimate freedom from his confinement. Even as a cripple, he is still a magician, teaching his craft to a young student who carries on his legacy. The movie has wonderful performances by Hrithik and Aishwariya Rai. The magician can do anything. He is a magic man who can make anything possible. He has tricks up his sleeve, and like the card in the Tarot, Ethan is mischievous and doesn't like playing by the rules. He is different from the rest of them, and a cut above all the competition.

THE HIGH PRIESTESS
Movie: Black (2005)

Like Guzaarish, this movie too is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Black is the story of a young girl (based on the life of Hellen Kellar) who is blind, deaf and dumb. She changes her life with the help of her teacher played by Amitabh Bachchan. Rani Mukherjee essays the role of Michelle McNally with elan and her character shines through all the obstacles she faces in her life. The High priestess is an intuitive and spiritual soul. Michelle has a very powerful sixth sense in the film, specially in the scene where she 'knows' that its going to snow when it is logically impossible. Only the High Priestess knows things which others don't and can feel the Earth from within its core, because that is where they live, in the soul, in the unconscious. Her inner self is so powerful, that it doesn't matter if they cannot hear the music, she can feel the vibrations and imagine the instruments playing and the people dancing. She can make magic out of even ordinary things.

THE EMPRESS
Movie: Mother India (1957)

No other film can represent the true Indian mother than Mother India. This film is an epic tale of a poverty stricken mother who has to look after her children. She is the mother of the soil. She ploughs the fields and fertiles the land, just like the Empress card in the Tarot. She is surrounded in a field of fertility and has worked hard, spinning her yarn for the future generations. In the film, Radha, played by Nargis, raises her sons through many trials and tribulations. But no matter what happens, she sticks to her moral code. In the end of the movie, her son becomes a daaku (bandit) who tries to rape a girl. She takes a gun and shoots her own son. She is the Mother of India, the mother of the future generations.

THE EMPEROR
Movie: Mughal-e-azam(1960)
also  Jodhaa Akbar (2008)

The reason I chose both these films is because the Emperor in these films is the same, Emperor Akbar. Mughal-e-azam is the  lovestory of Salim and courtesan Anarkali. Salim's father, Akbar did not want them to get married because of political reasons but he wasn't an unjust king, and in the end he spared the life of Anarkali. In Jodhaa Akbar, the Emperor is also shown to marry a Hindu even though it was not acceptable in those times. He allowed his wife to visit the temple and carry out her wishes. He was a very fair and just king. He would always do the right thing, even if it was war or giving his riches to the poor. He was one of the greatest kings of our country just like the Emperor card, who is very reliable and just.

I will continue with this section of the blog with the next cards 5-9 : The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength and The Hermit.

Card of the Day - Dec 19, 2011

Since the Christmas season is upon us, I thought that I would pick the Card of the Day from the Christmas Tarot by Corrine Kenner. This deck is available online on www.ChristmasTarot.com . It is a Major Arcana only deck and its theme is a traditional Victorian Christmas. The cards are very beautiful and Christmassy!! They bring with them the joy and the spirit of Christmas. Along with the cards, the website also has a guidebook for these cards. I will be displaying some of the cards till Christmas Day! Have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful and spiritual New Year 2012!

Today's card from the Christmas tarot is the Number 11 card of the Tarot 'Justice'. The card shows an innocent little girl in the snow with a white gown holding candles in her hand. She is like a goddess of justice. She holds two candles showing that she always sees both sides of the story and is not biased. She is using these candles to birn the candles on the trees. So she is spreading her justice everywhere and to everyone. She appears to be cool and calm, but inside, her orange lining under her gown is is fiery passion for the truth. There are 31 stars in the sky representing the days of the month, there is always justice which brings about enlightenment and experience. The card shows that justice will be done and issues that were hidden will come to light.

Card of the Day - Dec 18, 2011

Sharing (Queen of Wands)
Osho Zen Tarot

Today's Card of the Day is Sharing. The card shows a woman who has abundance in her life, she has a tray of fruits and has light in her life symbolized by the candle. She is happily willing to share her goodness with others with a smile on her face. In the background is a picture of sunflowers who always look towards the sun and grow brightly and beautifully. Today's message is to share our wealth, knowledge or whatever it is we have. If you know something important do not be hesitant to share it with others so they may benefit. Share your experiences as they could me more valuable than money for somebody.

The Bollywood Tarot

These are my two loves : Bollywood movies and Tarot cards. I thought today of a unique way to mesh them together. How about creating a fictional deck based on Bollywood, (I have never seen any !) though there are many decks out there including decks based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Simpsons, Star Wars and even Lost. Though these decks do not usually get published due to copyright reasons, fans make fictional decks to extend their knowledge and pay a tribute to their passion. I have come up with 22 Bollywood movies which fit the 22 Major Arcana cards. I have tried to take up those movies which India is proud of to showcase our best films to anyone around the world whoever is seeing this. Please watch these films. Some of them are classic masterpieces. Some are masala entertainers. Some are old as gold, and some belong to the new generation. The variety in our films is a great foundation for Tarot and I am looking forward to this journey. This is also a great opportunity for those who are addicted to Bollywood, to understand Tarot in their language. Tarot is not some mumbo-jumbo and is open to imagination and interpretation.

Welcome to the mystical and magical world of Bollywood!

Card of the Day - Dec 16, 2011

Trust (Knight of Cups)
Osho Zen Tarot

This card just shows a person flying up in the sky which is mostly blue and pink below. His arms are stretched like a bird. He is enjoying the ride and is completely trusting where he is going. Trust in the Universe. Do not doubt yourself or the direction your life is going. Everything is happening for the best. Just go with the ride and be surprised. Let go of your doubts and inhibitions and trust completely. Do not be afraid if you are going to fall down or that you can't fly. Go where your life takes you.

Card of the Day - Dec 15, 2011

Projections (7 of Cups)
Osho Zen Tarot

What we feel about a situation is different from what someone else may feel about the same thing. And in actuality, the truth is something else all together. Do not force your projections on others, because it is your truth, not the Universal truth. These projections are just illusions of reality. What is real? Nobody knows. We only assume that we do. Do not assume your false projections to be real. Do not feel that your projection of a particular person, that he is out to get you is real. You could be mistaken. We will never know what is the real truth, if we believe in lies. Always be curious and be on the quest to find the Truth.

Using Tarot Reversals

Recently I was a part of a secret Tarot Project which involved a number of Tarot readers from around the world. This Project was about Tarot Reversals. We were all given a single reversed Tarot card, and had to make interpretations along side the remaining 77 other cards also reversed or upright. So, in total, there were 78 x 78 x 2 combinations of Reversed cards. My card was The Emperor Reversed and I had so much fun doing this Project, mainly because I never used reversals earlier in my readings and I got to learn so much from this exercise. I can't write down my interpretations of the card down here as it is copyrighted material now, but I can tell you the process I went through to complete this project.  I took the help of a wonderful book by Mary K. Greer called 'The Complete book of Tarot Reversals'. This book is THE book for understanding reversals and I highly recommend it. The reversals Tarot project will be published in early 2012 in the form of a book called Tarot Turn and it will also be available on Amazon! So yay, I will be a published writer soon. This is highly encouraging for me, as I plan to write a book on Tarot sometime later in my life.

My philosophy on Tarot Reversals :

Perhaps because of my Virgo moon, I feel that things need to be straight and in order. So, I dislike the cards which come up upside down. And I do not give much importance to it. Also, I feel that the entire Tarot is made up of very well thought out archetypal images which have stood the test of time. This journey is explained through the 78 cards. So, I do not think it necessary to analyze the upside down versions as well as  there is enough imagery present in the cards themselves. The rich symbols and archetypes have different connotations whenever we see them in different situations. So having 156 meanings doesn't seem to make sense.

Zach Wong's Revelations Tarot:

Recently, I heard about a wonderful Tarot deck called 'Revelations Tarot' by Zach Wong. I have been meaning to buy this deck primarily because it is unique and a perfect one to practice reversals. Each card has two pictures, positive and negative. So, you only read the part of the card which comes upright in front of you. This is truly a Revelation! Please check out the wonderful pictures on the website. I am tempted to use reversals just so that I can work with this deck!

The following example has been taken from Zach Wong's website:

The Star

[intepretation]
She oozes with hope and balance inward and outwards. She embodies the giver of hope in our lives.

[reversed]
She turns her back on the world for she has lost all hope. She cannot give what she does not have within herself.

[symbols+images]
The concept of the Aquarian water bearer being the giver of life plays a symbolic role in the card. The sign of Aquarius also is one of air, and not water, dealing with matters of the mind and thought. The card plays towards the hope one can have in their mind and not necessarily in their heart.
The stars illuminate around her and serve a metaphor for dreams and hope which we look towards to. They number 8 - the sister to the card of Strength.
The doves in flight around her represent the freedom we feel inside when we are released from the troubles of life. She is also not dressed in any robes but is bare, only with her own hair to comfort her. She is not trapped by any material possessions or wants to.

There is only a dramatic swell of red around her representing an inner loss of hope. The loss frustrates her to a point of anger but she can only show grief. The showing of the back is a symbolic one of turning away or shutting out the world outside. Her posture lends towards her sorrow as she burdens the weight of her misery.

The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals:

The best book I have come across so far on Tarot reversals has to be Mary K. Greer's book 'The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals'. I love her book cover, which shows a Hanged man. He is the quintessential reversed card of the Tarot. He is reversed, even when he is upright! Mary K. Greer, in her book says that Reversals can be read in a number of ways. She clears out all the ambiguity and doubt that we may have about it. She suggests twelve ways to read reversed cards:

1. Using them as blocked or resisted energies
2. Projecting denial on a situation
3. Delayed, difficult or unavailability
4. Inner or the unconscious energy
5. According to the Moon Phases (round decks)
6. Changing direction or refusing
7. Lacking or no, non or not
8. Excessive
9. Misused or misdirected
10. Re words: Retried, Retracted, Reviewed, Reconsidered
11. Rectification
12. Unconventional, Shamanic, Magical, Dream interpretation

It is a very well researched book and gives a very different point of view about reversals, which makes you think and consider using them. If I will ever use Reversals in my readings, I don't know but it has definitely got me thinking in that direction. I took her advice in the book in preparing my 78 card-pair combinations for the Tarot Project X, and I am very satisfied with the results. Tarot is all about learning, and the learning never stops. Knowledge is never-ending and you can never know everything. So, do not keep your doors closed. Keep your options open and open your eyes to a world of possibilities. Sometimes consider looking at the same things upside down!

Card of the Day - Dec 14, 2011

Participation (4 of Wands)
Osho Zen Tarot

The card shows four different people of different colours : red, green, blue and yellow putting their hands forward to create something new. Even if people are different, sometimes they need to get along like a team and participate together for everyone else involved. Do not live in isolation, as the inner joy gained when you participate in a group cannot be replicated by any individual effort. When people are a part of a team, there is joy, sorrow, hope, expectations and trust. It is a complete experience where you can learn a lot which will help you later in your life. Living and dealing with people is an art, which can be mastered by being with people.

Card of the Day - Dec 13, 2011

Stress (7 of Wands)
Osho Zen Tarot

Today's Card of the Day is 'Stress'. It shows a man who is furiously blowing a trumpet while balancing on a balloon which is being pricked by a pet monkey. He seems to be highly stressed and is also juggling seven burning candles in the middle of this all. The message of this card is simple. Do not let anything stress you out. You need to take a break. If you feel that how much ever you do, nothing is working out, then it is best to leave things for the day and tackle it some other time with a cooler mind.Do not stress out and harm your health for things which will not matter in the long run. The man in the card is doing so much, that his eyes are shut and he cannot see the money about to burst his bubble. We need to work smartly, not hard. Do not waste your energy if it is not required. Ask yourself if the task is worth your time and energy. Only then take up any stressful tasks.

Card of the Day - Dec 10, 2011

Innocence (19- The Sun)
Osho Zen Tarot

This card shows an old man who is 'innocently' looking at the grasshopper perched upon his hand. He is in a state of excitement and curiousity, just like a child who sees something new. No matter what our age, we must always be curious and look at the world with wonder. We will always find something new to be amazed about which we had never noticed before. If you observe nature and its marvels, you will find that there is a lot to discover. We think we know everything, but we must venture out in the world like a child and experience everything first-hand for the first time. We must try to preserve our innocence as much as we can till the end of our lives.

Card of the Day - Dec 9, 2011

No-Thingness (V-The Heirophant)
Osho Zen Tarot

Today's card of the day is No-thingness. This card is just a complete black space with nothing else. We need to be aware of the meaning of this card. No-thingness is not the same as nothingness. When there is no desire for anything material, and when we are in deep meditation we reach the state of no-thingness when nothing matters to us and we are in a state of bliss. We should be in this state as much as possible in our lives. And let nothing bother us or put us down. This is a very advanced form of Osho philosophy to just be. Spirituality lies within, not in rituals and temples. We need to find our own bliss. Traditionally this card is the opposite of The Heirophant card which means churches and religious practises. Here, it means spiritual awareness and awakening of the soul. It is a dark card, which shows us the path can be lonely ans scary but one that will bring in the light.

Card of the Day -Dec 8, 2011

Totality - (5 of Wands)
Osho Zen Tarot

The card shows three trapeze artists performing a very advance act. Two of them are hanging from ropes while the third one is being exchanged between the two of them. They exemplify the meaning of 'totality'. They are so engrossed in what they are doing, that they are truly in sync with each other. The rhythm of their form immerses them into a different world where they are not bothered about any outside influences. They are also not worried or bothered that one of them could fall down below. We must be like these trapeze artists in our life. We must be so immersed in what we are doing that we love it and it keeps us alive. We mustn't be idle, because that makes the mind wander. Also, keeping ourselves happy and busy keeps us out of other people's business, as we are content and satisfied within ourselves.

December 07, 2011

Card of the Day - Dec 7, 2011

Morality (Queen of Clouds/Swords)
Osho Zen Tarot

Morality is made up of the rules and regulations of our society. The lady in the card has become a 'dried up old prune' because of morality. She has become rigid and frozen and wrinkled. The happiness has gone out of her life. If we live our life by rules to the T, even we might end up becoming like her - dull and boring. Make your life exciting and interesting, not just for others but for yourself. Do things which excite you and keep you alive from within. Break the rules at times, and be like a child. Do not let old age catch up with you. Do not see things in only black and white. Learn to live a colourful existence. Do not be judgemental, it limits your ability to see the beauty and godliness within everyone.

Take a Chill Pill!

How do you deal with a situation when you are expected to do something but you physically can't? It seems really bad and you might even feel guilty not performing your duties, specially when you are under tremendous pressure from all sides. What should one do at a time like this? There is no point in feeling guilty and pressurized. If you are obliged to go to a best friend's birthday but you are busy at work, if a person wants an urgent tarot reading but you are tied up, or if you need to study for an exam but you are down with the flu. Sometimes we forget that there is another force among us that governs things. Things usually happen for the best. So if you are unable to make a commitment, just take a chill pill. Do not stress yourself.. because it is NOT your fault. Things are not under your control. You cannot plan your life like a cut-out and expect it to plan out that way. What makes life interesting are its uncertainties and unexpected occurences. You could miss a flight because of traffic or fall sick on your honeymoon. No matter what happens, always count your blessings, they will definitely be much more than your difficulties. Be thankful and appreciate whatever is going right, instead of focusing on what all is wrong in your life. By being grateful, we are inviting greater things into our life. Ignore the mistakes, and focus on the rewards. Sooner or later, everything works out for the best. Many times I am unable to do a tarot reading because of personal reasons like weddings or birthdays or lack of sleep or just not being in 'the mood'. Earlier I used to worry myself crazy, that I wasn't helping someone out. But only if I'm up and above will I be able to give a good and accurate reading which will satisfy me and my client. Do not play the blame game. Stop stressing yourself out due to circumstances which are beyond your control. Go with the flow of life. Let things be unplanned. Do not chalk out your every single move.

The most important mantra in life : Relax and take a Chill Pill

Card of the Day - Dec 6, 2011

Inner Voice (High Priestess)
Osho Zen Tarot

Today's Card of the Day is Inner Voice. The card originally is the High Priestess in other decks and represents your intuition and inner self. Today, listen to your inner voice or your intuition. If you want any answers look deep within. You know what to do and what is the right step to take. Be like the dolphins who are very intuitive mammals and have a sharp sixth sense. Away from all the noise and the tension, there is a voice within you that only you have which is yours. Only you know what is the best thing for you to do.

Going With the Flow (Ace of Cups)
Osho Zen Tarot

Going With the Flow means letting go of your own rules and expectations. Sometimes things happen which are unplanned and unexpected. But in the end, everything happens for a reason and it works out for the best for everyone. Do not question why things happen and why they don't. Even delays are a blessing in disguise. Sometimes things seem to happen very fast. Just go with the flow of life. We need to be aware that there is an important force more powerful than us that makes things happen. We are only a drop in the ocean and a speck of dust in the universe. We must be aware of the bigger picture, only then we will realize the greatness of God's creation.

Card of the Day - Dec 4, 2011

The Dream (6 of Cups)
Osho Zen Tarot

The card shows a young woman visualizing or dreaming about being a queen and romancing a king. She is visibly poor but has her hopes up in the stars. This is a card of hope. No matter how ridiculous it seems, one must always dream and visualize what one wants. Only by seeing and feeling our future, can we actually make it happen. This is the power of "The Secret" mentioned in the book by Rhonda Bryne. No dream is too silly or too impossible. Our thoughts and our words can create reality.

Card of the Day - Dec 3, 2011

This month, I will be drawing the daily Card of the Day from the Osho Zen Tarot.

Today's card is Courage (Traditionally 'Strength' card #8)

The card shows a flower growing beautifully in spite of being stuck between a rock. Even though it is difficult, it grows and even a smaller flower s growing along with it. If a small flower can bloom and spread its fragrance in the world, then we too can triumph against all odds and flower beautifully in times of trouble. Troubles make us stronger. This card reminds me of the phrase and the book "Between a Rock and a Hard Place". Never give up. Keep on trying. True courage comes from within, it is our inner strength to overcome hurdles. It has nothing to do with building muscles or working out at the gym.
